Case study

Payments transformation -
collaboration in an open world

The challenge

A leading UK financial institution with a savings and mortgage customer base of over 15 million, was facing challenges around the performance and resiliency of their payments systems.

Their payments estate was complex - inhibiting change and preventing cost efficiencies. There was also a real danger that with Open Banking and PSD2 regulations looming, the client would not be able to handle the anticipated but unknown increase in transaction volumes.

Icon's solution

Icon formed a joint core team with the client’s payments enterprise architects to enhance their payments architecture capability, define a target reference architecture and a roadmap that met the client’s technology and business objectives.

Over a period of 6 months Icon delivered:

  • A defined operating model for architecture development and delivery based on industry standard TOGAF methodology, focusing on agility, collaboration and a ‘test and learn’ approach
  • A payments target reference architecture comprised of architecture building blocks that specifically met the client’s business objectives relating to resiliency, performance, agility and simplification. This has provided a foundation for future initiatives such as the UK New Payments Architecture (NPA)
  • A refreshed payments architecture roadmap depicting the transition states in moving to the target state in a manner that balanced efficiency, speed and risk

True to Icon’s belief of ‘empowering the client’ these we delivered in close collaboration and partnership with the client, ensuring that the work aligned with the wider strategy of the client and that it could be carried forward with use of the client’s internal resources.
